High School Equivalency Preparation and Testing (HiSET®)

Free HiSET® classes provide preparation for high school equivalency testing, as well as basic instruction in reading, writing and math.

HSE Preparation

High School Equivalency (HSE) classes are available for Missouri residents who are 17 or older and not enrolled in high school.

ELIGIBILITY: To register, students must be at least 17 years old, not enrolled in high school, must have a Missouri address, and must not be in the U.S. on an F-1 (student) Visa.

Limited Exceptions for 16-Year-Olds
  • Public school students who have earned 16 high school credits must provide two documents to enroll:
    • A letter from the school that includes the date the student dropped out.
    • A transcript or other official verification from the school that the student has successfully completed 16 credits of high school work.
  • Homeschooled students who have at least 1000 hours of high school level home education must meet the requirements of 167.031 RSMo for course instruction and have written permission of the parent or legal guardian indicating compliance.

HSE Registration

All HSE registration sessions for the 2021-22 school year will be face-to-face at St. Charles Community College. Students must attend a set of 2 enrollment sessions for orientation and initial assessment testing to determine HiSET® readiness prior to class attendance. This initial assessment provides information for an individual learning plan. You do not need an appointment to attend registration, but you must be on time and complete both sessions to be enrolled into a class. Classes will be offered both face-to-face and virtually, subject to availability.

PLEASE NOTE: IET classes meet in cohorts. The fall cohorts will begin the week of September 20, 2021. The spring cohorts will begin the week of January 24, 2022. To enroll in an IET class, students must be registered in an English as a Second Language or High School Equivalency class.

These classes may have a tuition charge and/or eligibility requirements. Tuition assistance may be available. 

Certified Kitchen Cook

Students will earn the Certified Kitchen Cook credential from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) after completing 96 classroom hours and passing a certification exam. The class includes training in sanitation, food safety, use of kitchen equipment, and food preparation vocabulary. 

Certified Logistics Technician/Certified Logistics Associate

Students will study for the Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) credential during the first semester and the Certified Logistics Technician (CLT) credential during the second semester. An industry specialist will introduce students to the basics of logistics in CLA and expand on those concepts in CLT, as well as prepare the students for the credential exams. Students will gain the skills needed to be successful in all areas of logistic environments. 

Certified Nursing Assistant

This program, approved by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), provides the instruction and on-the-job training required to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the state of Missouri. Classes will be taught by a certified nursing instructor. The program teaches basic nursing skills, resident rights, safety, communication techniques and infection control. CNAs are eligible for employment in nursing homes, hospitals, home care agencies and doctor’s offices. Required Healthcare for ESL or Healthcare for HSE companion classes will reinforce the terminology, conversions and processes required to pass the CNA credential exam. 

Microsoft Office Specialist

Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2016 Core exam preparation program for MOS certification testing. Includes practice of skills measuring your ability to accomplish technical tasks for information workers in the industry standard software. Students will enhance math and writing skills while earning the MOS credentials.

MoLearns

Students can also prepare for the HiSET® online at http://www.molearns.com. Students in this program are required to complete an initial skills assessment. Following this assessment, students are emailed assignments to complete online. Students must return for post-testing when appropriate. The HiSET® test is not available online. However, the test can be taken on computer in the SCC Assessment Center or any certified testing center in Missouri.

The HiSET® website provides free practice tests for each of the 5 subject area tests. To take advantage of these free resources, visit https://hiset.ets.org/prepare/materials/ and select Interactive Practice Tests in the Free Test Prep Tools section for online, interactive practice tests or https://hiset.ets.org/resources/prep/ for downloadable practice tests.

HiSET® Testing

As of Jan. 2, 2014, the test of High School Equivalency in Missouri is the HiSET®.

To register for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET®), go to www.hiset.ets.org. The HiSET® is a computer-based test made up of 5 subject area tests which are scheduled separately. HiSET® tests are normally administered every business day in the St. Charles Community College Assessment Center (636-922-8629) according to appointments created on the HiSET® website at http://hiset.ets.org/take/schedule. When you have passed all 5 subject area tests, you will receive a certificate of High School Equivalence from the Missouri Department of Education. The total cost for all 5 subject area tests is $98.75. Test retakes are available for a small fee. Test results appear in your account on the HiSET® website within 3-10 business days. Our FREE math program will help you move up the math ladder with a hands-on, personalized class designed to help you overcome obstacles that have kept you from succeeding in the past. Students work in small groups to master the topics they need. Build a foundation to master math!

ACT Test Preparation

Statistics show that test preparation is the key to higher ACT scores. The materials for this program were developed by Cambridge Education Services and are used throughout the country with an extraordinary success rate.

Course Highlights Include:

  • Classroom lessons in ALL subject areas covered by the ACT.
  • Test-taking strategies.
  • Homework reinforcement modules that include simulated test problems.
  • Skill-building exercises including practice drills and remedial work.
  • Actual test simulation at the beginning of the course computer diagnostic assessment to identify weaknesses.
